A great pastor must first have a great relationship with God.
1. Spend much time in prayer.
2. Spend much time in the Word.
3. Fast when he can.
4. Be available to his people.
I think the more time spent on #1 will require less time spent on #4.
A man spending time with God building a relationship first with God will give him the wisdom to pastor, the peace to take the troubles to the Lord instead of trying to carry them himself. That makes it healthy for both him, his family and his flock.
Spending much time in prayer develops deeper love than can be shared with the flock teaching them to love.
Spending much time in the Word, gives him wisdom to answer the questions of the flock.
But this is not necessarily the normal, but I do believe there are pastors out there that do follow this creed.
