The Oklahoma thread.....

I have traveled all over the United States and Europe, but nothing feels like home except Oklahoma...where the wind comes sweeping down the plains...

The purpose of this thread is to allow all of the current and former "Okies" to come together and speak about the motherland....God's Country...the great State of Oklahoma!!

(all non Okies......you are not allowed to post....all wannabe Okies..feel free)

hehe

Oklahoma Facts:

1-Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state, with over one million surface acres of water and 2,000 more miles of shoreline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined.

2-On April 22, 1889, the first day homesteading was permitted, 50,000 people swarmed into the area. Those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called Sooners. Hence the state's nickname.

3-Oklahoma's four mountain ranges include the Ouachitas, Arbuckles, Wichitas and the Kiami.

4-Oklahoma radio.. WKY was the first radio station transmitting from west of the Mississippi River.

5-Bob Dunn a musician from Beggs invented the first electric guitar 1935.

6-Boise City, Oklahoma was the only city in the United States to be bombed during World War II. On Monday night, July 5, 1943, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a B-17 Bomber based at Dalhart Army Air Base (50 miles to the south of Boise City) dropped six practice bombs on the sleeping town.

7-The world's first installed parking meter was in Oklahoma City, on July 16, 1935. Carl C. Magee, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is generally credited with originating the parking meter. He filed for a patent for a "coin controlled parking meter" on May 13, 1935.

8-Oklahoma is home to a large number of Country Music singers...Reba McIntire, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Brooks and Dunn, Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, ....just to name a few!!

9-Forests cover approximately 24 percent of Oklahoma.

10-Oklahoma's two most populous cities are Oklahoma City, with 463,201 residents, and Tulsa with 374,851. The next largest cities are Norman, with a population of 87,290 and Lawton, which has 86,028 people.

Besides the above....the people are just plains NICE!!

God Bless

(and no negative Okie comments please)
