It would seem to me that Daniel's "time of the end" is defined by the end of the sentence.
While travel has always been, the "many" really hasn't come into being until more modern travel. The same is true of knowledge increasing. It really hasn't been until the last few decades that major increase in knowledge started taking place.

It would appear that the "time of the end" carries different definitions.

The KNOWLEDGE that would be increased is not technology and science. But KNOWLEDGE OF THE VISIONS' meaning.

Daniel 12:4 KJV But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

Daniel 12:8-9 KJV And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? (9) And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.

The knowledge is regarding the meaning of the visions that Daniel did not know.

Knowledge about the MEANINGS would be increased.

Adam Clarke:

knowledge shall be increased by these means; though the meaning shall not be fully known till the events take place: Then the seal shall be broken, and the sense become plain.

Albert Barnes:

And knowledge shall be increased - To wit, by this method. The angel seems to mean that in this way there would be an advance in knowledge on all the subjects of religion, and particularly on the points to which he had referred. This would be one of the characteristics of these times, and this would be the means by which it would be accomplished.

Jamieson Fausset and Brown

“at the time of the end,” that is, near its fulfillment, “many shall run to and fro,” that is, scrutinize it, running through every page. Compare Hab_2:2 [Calvin]: it is thereby that “the knowledge (namely, of God’s purposes as revealed in prophecy) shall be increased.”

And THIS agrees perfectly with the idea of the book being sealed, or the words CLOSED. This means no one can understand when it is sealed or close.d But at the time of the end, JOHN's day, it was unsealed, and the MEANINGS KNOWN./

Notice:

Revelation 1:3 KJV Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

Revelation 22:10 KJV And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.

Sealing NOT the visions meant not HIDING the meanings. For the time is at hand. It is FOR the Church. Not hidden from the church. Hidden from Daniel's people in his day.

The idea of knowledge being technology and science is a common mistaken notion and is totally out of context.
