love v. legalism today
interesting definition of legalism for your thoughts
if a married couple love each other, but then fall out of love each other and find others reasons to stay married, they only have a legal obligation, but no longer are "in love"
few problems with the above: it puts love as a touchy-feely abstract and not as willful commitment. the goal of this analogy is to say that people who question standards have fallen out of love with jesus, and to them it's all about legal obligations, therefore legalism. but for those who are in love, it doesn't matter.
he warns people not to follow others into "spiritual adultery" with a promiscuous and common world. those that have, have allowed a carnal spirit to come in to their mind. he makes an analogy of the helmet of salvation as something that prevents you from listening to criticism of the ministry and standards. "it's not because you are a coward, but that your mind is holy" and the same thing for "lurid novels and television."
obviously this notion that the only reason to question outward standards is because of a rift in love relationship between you and jesus is open to scrutiny and debate.
