EDMONSON, Ky. --
An Edmonson, Ky., man was charged with first-degree criminal abuse after allegations he kept a young child in a dog crate.
Kentucky State Police executed a search warrant on the Bee Springs, Ky., home of 49-year-old David Petty last Friday.
Information from an anonymous call to the Department of Community Based Services led police to investigate allegations that Petty was beating his girlfriend's 4-year-old son with a wooden stick and locking the boy in an outdoor dog crate at night.
KSP took several items from Petty's home, including a dog crate found in the back yard.
Police said the boy lived in Petty's home for the past four years with his mother and the couple's three younger children.
The boy's mother left the home last week, taking the 4-year-old and a baby with her, leaving two toddlers in the home with Petty.
All four children are now in the custody of the state.
Petty was released from jail on Tuesday on a $25,000 surety bond.
Neighbors describe Petty as "strange," and said they didn't see the couple's three children very often, and when they did, the 4-year-old was not with them.
