Re: Adornment!!

To teach young men that young women who wear make-up want sex is a very wrong idea to plant in their young minds......

Women do not do it for those reasons. But scientifically that is the unconscious effect, and the inventors of make-up knew it.

Ok, I was going to let it pass... but seeing how this is the second reference to a scientific research paper that proves such. I need to ask for references.

Where is the reference? Who did the study? Was a placebo group used? What type of control was used?

Blessings,
me

Still leaves out a lot, because it is only two bars, and I would think that men would tend to be more aggressive on a Saturday night in wanting to meet a woman (ie. hookup) versus a Wednesday night. We don't know how many women were used, if they were both given a "makeup night" and a "non-makeup night". We don't know if there clothing was identical, or if they were dressed to match the makeup.

Nice point though, and I quote "lt has been found that cosmetics do improve female facial attractiveness when judgments were made based on photographs. Furthermore. these were laboratory studies and no field study exists in the literature."

Then towards the end of the report... "A few publications suggest that cosmetics enhance the facial attractiveness of women who wear makeup. Furthermore, the stimuli used in this research lack ecological validity. Those stimuli are photographs that depict women in artificial ways, such as unusual poses with physical details obscured. So there is a need for research to examine the role of cosmetics in more natural, dynamic and three-dimensional settings. Secondly, dependent variables have been limited to the use of photographs. Furthermore, the effect of rated attractiveness on behavior still remains in question."

Based on that, I would say Gueguen's report supports more scientific research in the field to determine if makeup really does make much of a difference in the behavior of people. C' la vie.

Re: Adornment!!

Of course, it might have just been the music in the background that had those men so interested.... or the beer in their glass.
2 men per hour making a pass if you wore makeup
1.5 men per hour making a pass if you didn't wear makeup.

(Of course we don't know how the observers defined "a pass." Is there a chance the observers were biased towards the women wearing makeup? I mean 1/2 a man pass per hour doesn't sound like much more)

"Gueguen recruited two women in their early twenties to go to bars for sixty sessions on twenty nights, and sit at a free table near where they were highly visible. The women either wore makeup or not — and when they did, they applied to it to their eyes, cheeks, and lips. Observing the women were members of Gueguen’s research team, who counted the number of men that approached the made-up girls and the minutes lapsed before and between approaches.

The results? Although men approached the women in every session, the come-ons were more frequent when women wore makeup. It took less time for men to make a pass at the women (an average of 17 min vs. 23 min), and more men approached the women per hour (a mean of 2.0 vs 1.5). "

Actually I do believe the come on's are far more frequent based on consumption. The Mythbusters even took on the beer-glasses myth of women appearing more attractive the more you had to drink -and confirmed it!

Women do things such as this for mens sake when it accomplishes their intended goals.

But women, oddly enough, most often "doll up" for other women. They seem to live in a constant state of competition or seeking of approval.

Yes, there is a definite competitive component. Women do different things for different motives. Young men should never be taught WHY women do certain things. Come on, even long married guys can't figure out why their own wives do certain things!!

I never wear perfume. It gives me a headache.

TRUE! One thing I noticed is that women are very much concerned over certain shoes and certain dress styles THAT ONLY OTHER WOMEN APPRECIATE. As a man, I get nothing out of what style of shoes a woman wears. Only other women are impressed.
