We all have this in common....we have deep roots in the Apostolic church. You can take the person out of the church but you can't ever completely take the church out of the person. It gets in your DNA. It is part of who we are.
True... and kinda sad.

There is nothing sad about that whatsoever.

I think so.

The years of hard-wiring in me are permanent damage.

My legalistic judgment of others. Warming up to seeing people not in uniform. Feeling like I have to stand on my head to have a "successful" time of worship. Anxiety sometimes about salvation.

All of this, God is helping me through, but I no doubt sense is permanent damage.

You have your opinion and I have mine.

Sounds like a personal problem, not a church one.

It's a very personal problem.

Which is why I explained the "sadly" comment about the hard-wiring from years of indoctrination and cultural brainwashing (often involuntary).

Its your life, it always has been. Unless they put a gun to your head nothing was involuntary. This way of thinking is always funny to me because we all talk about how we should think for ourselves when it comes to politics yet somehow that dont apply to religion.

You don't get it, that's all.

When you believe things in a certain way, beliefs have consequences. They also produce culture. Culture affects us in both voluntary and involuntary ways. Things we don't even think about. If "outsiders" were those with long sideburns, televisions lighting their rooms and mustaches, you consider than for a few decades and it's a pretty well burnt template into your subconscious. It has trained patterns in your brain. This can be fleshed out a 100 different ways.
