I don't know what it is like in the States but in Canada most preachers would rather sit in the congregation than go on the platform.
Ore of the reasons they will have them on the platform is to make room in (usually) a small sanctuary. They can be ready to say something or testify.
Also at Altar call thay are right there ready to pray for someone.

This hasn't been my experience too often. If ministry sits in the congregation, it is normally on the first pew. Personally, if I'm not preaching I enjoy my seat, about midway back, in the midst of the congregation.

To be fair, it's practical. Those who are going to be speaking will be close to the podium. It's not necessarily a means of "exalting oneself."

True, but I've never been a fan of the "Johnny Carson chairs" on the platform. And what Jeff Arnold called "wall papaer for Christ". Just a little too much Matthew 23:6 for my tastes.

I have no problem with preacher only forums. I think it is great preachers of like faith can have a place to discuss both doctrine and church matters AND comment on the church world as they see it.
A forum of conservative preachers would naturally discuss trends or ministries they see as straying from their beloved legalism "ALERT: It is rumored Bro. SoandSo had a youth meeting and there were THREE teenagers with short sleeves on there!!!!!"
By the same token I have no doubt that a lib preachers forum would discuss the absurdity of their local ultra cons legalism and the irony when an ultra con or conservative preacher is discovered to have been engaging in ongoing sexual sin while thumping his pulpit and enforicing a stringent clothesline of dress codes.
