Scare tactics don't save anyone more than when the Word itself is preached in truth and love. Where one gets the idea that screaming and pounding the pulpit 'til they're red in the face equates preaching the truth in love, I have no idea.
I just hope you're able to find reconcilitation (for lack of a better way to put it) with past events and become involved again. After all, you're now an adult and in charge of your own family's well-being.
I've had my own share of hinderances and setbacks of this and that, but time and separation from situations, and people involved in them, can do more good than one might realize, all the while praying and pleading for God to work it out in whatever way is best for everyone...
