You'd be surprised if each one of us were to reveal our bloodlines, what would be in them. LOL! You are no different than most any one in the US for sure!

Re: Is your church multi-racial/multi-cultural?

I am currently seeing a black man. Not dating per say, but occasional, every 3 or 4 months, "dinner dates".
My mom has told me that I can't bring him to our family home, he would not be welcomed.
Since I have never been one to conform to "racial" lines and even as a child did not see the difference in color, this has upset me very much. And my dad is a former Minister. He did not feel this way. But my mom sets the tone of the home and he defers to her now.

My church is a Multi-race/Multi-cultural church. I would say 1/3 white, 1/3 black, 1/3 hispanic. We have couples that are Black/White, Hispanic/White, Asian/White, Asian/Black.

It makes me sad to see churches or hear of churches that do not know how to blend the congregation. I would not be able to go to a church that did not teach unity and peace and non-segregation.

There is no scripture against interracial marriages no matter what anybody says.

I know some oldtimers that use Numbers 36:5-9 as their excuse

Sandra in the south there is something called the 'one drop rule' which means if you have one drop of black blood in you then you are black even if you look white. So by those standards you would be expected to marry a black man.

I finally agree with Ferd about something... it is completely stupid. I do think it's sad Ferd that you had to verbally caution your friends/family not to use those kinds of terms. One of the big blessings of not being racially 'pure' is that we never have to worry about all that

I did not leave my church over racial issues only but it was a consideration. They were bigots and made no attempt to hide it from me presuming me white. I heard the N word in the sanctuary more than once but never over the pulpit. The pastor even invited a black family to church once and then made a huge deal over it to the point that it made everyone uncomfortable. He really wanted a token black family so that the church would appear to be more balanced but never would have wanted larger numbers of minorities. He was trying so hard to prove how with the times he was... A few months later he refused to marry my friends daughter because her fiance was black. He was from out of town and they wanted the wedding in the brides hometown and church. They had a civil wedding and found another church and so did her parents.

It would be hard for me to even guess Sandra if you should stay or go but if you feel that they are not sincerely loving toward you or value you less because of your race then yes maybe it might be time to look around.

Remember that the Confederate Flag doesn't mean the same to many in the South that it does in the North. In the same token the Civil War wasn't about slavery in the South, rather it was about states rights. Even in the North it wasn't about slavery, rather it was about keeping the Union.

Re: Is your church multi-racial/multi-cultural?

Before you blow a gasket realize that the Confederate flag is a symbol of Southern pride to many southerners... Not white pride or racial prejudice. It has no anti-black sentiment at all to some. It is just part of their heritage much the way that other areas have some secondary symbol after their primary symbol as identifiers. It is meant to build them up and not to put any one else down.

If this is a young person who was taken from his roots environment and transported to yankee land against his will he may just be trying to hang on to his heritage.

Be sure that you have all the facts before you go in with guns blazin'. I'd keep it very meek and mild and maybe slip in a question about the flag and what it symbolizes to them rather than making bold statements and later looking like a fool. That's just me but it is a hard won lesson from doing it the other way too many times to count. Harsh words can never be taken back no matter how we wish it were so.

Peace.

I see Randy and I posted similar thoughts at exactly the same time... maybe there is something to that.
