Part of my problem is that I do not trust doctors or psychiatrists. My perspective is that a person who is an immenent danger to themselves or others should be restrained and sedated until they can be restored to their right mind. I am not a believer in pill popping, however that is my personal preference, and I have taken medicines and visited doctors when necessary. To me it seems to be a greater waste of my time and resources to visit them.

What I believe should not have an effect on what anyone on this board does. In my personal opinion the only person Matt should be talking to this about in the church is the pastor. None of the other members should be told and for exactly these reasons.

Pastors have prejudices too and not all of them are even that smart. They also gossip, share things with their gossipy wives and gossipy elders/deacons.

I work in medicine and I think that because of it I'm no longer that enamored of doctors Jay... and I am a Christian and I am no longer that enamored of pastors either! I have come to realize that neither is any more than a flawed human.

The reason that I would stick with doctors in this case and not involve pastors is because it is their field. Pastors, unless they have specific training in dealing with mental illness, (and very, very few do) really have no business rendering an opinion on medications except to support what the doctor is doing. Chemical imbalances in the brain do not go away from wishful thinking and serious damage can result from discontinuing meds abruptly or too early.

Sadly most mentally ill patients see themselves as somehow 'abnormal' and the desire to 'just be normal' can make them stop treatment against medical advice. Compound this with others meddling and you can have a perfect storm that culminates in loss of life. So if you know someone who is being treated for an illness, physical or mental, please refrain from meddling in their medical care. It is really not your business.

I pray that you personally, nor your parent, spouse or child ever suffer from a mental illness. It is very humbling, I promise you. And while you seem like you could use a good dose of humility here Jay I would not want to see you get one. I will just pray that God enlighten you some other way that does not require suffering.

I will also add that what you are saying makes no sense. You advocate restraint and sedation (medication)... ????? I thought you were against medication?????

"until the person can be restored to their right mind".... What if that takes years, decades, a lifetime????? Are we to leave them in restraints? In a hospital setting? Who will pay for that? Who be a spouse to their husband/wife? Who will raise their children? Work their jobs?

You need to do some research on how serious mental illness was handled before these drugs existed... Have you ever heard of a sanitarium? Insane asylum? Places where people were put away for life to suffer in the torment of mental illness. Where they stayed until they found some way to kill themselves or were killed by someone else or just died?

Not trying to be dramatic, just real... and give you some idea of what you are REALLY advocating.

That's rough Jay. Restrained and sedated? Ouch. We're human beings.
