He was really on fire for most (all?) of the UPC holiness standards of the time.

lol - he is a awesome man of God. He upheld the UPC standards when he was my pastor about eight years ago.

He IS a great man - with a sweet wife! Knowing him from years ago, I'm pretty sure that he still upholds the UPC standards, but I don't believe that he is judgmental about them. Only "knowing" him and not "sitting under" him as a pastor, I cannot vouch for that definitely; but I do believe that he is is a kind man. I know that he has fellow-shipped with former UPC ministers that he attended college with.

Him and Deb were at our house many times when we first started attending. He WAS pretty strict at the time but he was not part of the "royal priesthood" that is so many pastors. I don't ever recall ever hearing a fear based sermon about someone disobeying the man of God and dying as a result. OK, I do remember fear based sermons but he was not a man who felt he was always being challenged. He gained respect because he was respectable, not because he demanded it because of his high and lofty position.

Have not personally talked with him in many years, but when I knew him, he was always a humble man. Yes, he was pretty strict when I knew him, but I think part of that was because he felt God had brought him so far that he wanted to be as far from what he had been as he could. It was always my opinion that he lived the life he felt called to live, but he didn't expect everyone else to live just like he did. Now, as a pastor, he may have had stricter "standards" that he preached in his church. I know in recent years he has maintained fellowship with several more liberal pastors that he knew in college.
