I have heard of "hit the hay" ... we also say "hit the sack" ...
My MIL calls a butter knife a "case knife" ... and her trunk is called a "turtle shell"
My parents called the couch a "chesterfield"... haven't heard that one in a long time. When my now husband, then boyfriend arrived at our house for the first time, my dad invited him in to sit on the chesterfield. I remember seeing the look of shock on his face and it looked like he was going to pelt and run. I went and sat down on the couch and patted the seat beside me and he gladly sat down. Later, I learned he thought my dad was talking about sitting on a gun (the only thing he could think of that might remotely be a "chesterfield") ... and he wasn't sure what to do... we STILL laugh about that one!
