I am not (I hope) being critical... I just freak out a little that anyone would consider letting a sick family member get sicker in order to avoid cutting hair... To me it's akin to cutting toenails... protein strands... all this fuss over protein strands...

Oh, I'm with you on that, as I expect MOST here are as well.

This whole issue of hair is such a weird one for an organization to invest so much stock into as one of their defining attributes.
