The reason why the police chief in Sanford was let go was due to, in large part, to the inconsistencies in what should have happened in the investigation process and what really happened in the investigation process.
Remember, the lead detective initially did not want to let the defendant go home that night/early morning.

He was let go because of political pressure to please the growing unrest in the community over the misconception the media made of the case before all the evidence could be examined.
It's not uncommon to not charge someone right off the bat...it took a week before they charged Aaron Hernandez with murder even though he seemed like a suspect from the get go
