Adam thought he covered up quite well by making aprons. He stopped with aprons of fig leaves since he felt it was adequate. But when God's presence came he runs and hides. Obviously he did not proceed with more covering since he felt he solved the problem. But when the WORD OF GOD was heard, he realized he did not solve the problem. NOT ENOUGH COVERING. So God takes away aprons and gives ROBES!

They really weren't aprons.
They were more like belts, KJV interpreters came up with aprons, the JPS tanakh says girdle. But the word is belt.
Like a thong?
