I do think that for some the Taliban is an apt decription. The Taliban just actually does (when in power) what many ultra con Pentecostals would do if they had the power.
Now I don't mean the indiscriminate killing, terrorism, etc. I do mean the extreme leglalism or "standards" that they imposed on the public through a radical Islamic government when they governed Afghanistan.
I think if many ultra cons had half a chance they would very quickly outlaw makeup,jewelry, and pants on women. All women. Same goes for closing movie theaters, shutting down TV broadcasting or at least greatly restricting it to nothing immodest, banning all music except gospel (and perhaps country since many like it secretly - at least in the Deep South of Ms. and La.!!!).
That is where I think the Taliban analogy is right on the money. I have related before how just before we invaded Afghanistan I read a news article describing a border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Afghan checkpoint was basicly a shack with miles and miles of audio tape that had been stripped from cassettes hanging on the walls. They did not allow any music tapes or CD's into Afghanistan except for religious sermons and chants. I remember thinking that is what ultra con OP's would do in America if given half a chance.
