The first step of the apology is the hardest:

1. Admit you were wrong!

As others have mentioned, saying you're "sorry" can have many meanings, but admitting you were wrong leaves no doubt.

What if someone gets offended by your stance on a subject that is passionate to you?

I was wrong for stating my position in a way that was offensive to you. I know the way that I stated my position caused you hurt and anger. Please forgive me for my insensitivity. I promise to carefully consider how I state my position from here on out!

or......

I was wrong for losing my temper during our passionate exchange of posts on a sensitive subject. ..................etc.
