I got in a bit of a polarized discussion over at another forum board when I dwelled on the idea that a core appeal in football is the delivery of violence into the weaker opponent.
Does anyone think football (American) would hold the position it does in our psyche without the administration of being a voyeristic seat at a good "fight"?
Football is about the survival and conquering of a weaker enemy or opponent. As spectators, we get our appetite filled for violence, without a shot being fired! I enjoy watching the more talented and stronger group of men defeat their opponent. Many times the more talented and stronger team is playing my team!
In the end, they all shake hands and prepare for another day of battle!
I see myself vicariously through my favorite players!

Okay.
btw, did you hear any of the news reporting surrounding the whole pension topic for NFL vets, the chronic orthopedic distress and outright disabililites. The conventional wisdom for the reason why so many NFL vets took their pension earlier at 45 (thus reducing the monthly payment) was they had acctuary information that said a big chunk of the folks would never see 55.
No shots fired but plenty of causalties.

The effects of playing football after you are old doesn't seem to matter to the young athletes when they see only fame, money and a privileged lifestyle.
I don't feel sorry for them when they made Millions of dollars and didn't put any away for hard times.
These players know the risks, but the reward is greater than the risk!

thanks for the perspective.
my point was just that the price paid to provide the vicarious rush for the spectator does involve a type of shot being fired; the causalties among the athletic mercenaries.

the players suffering right now are the ones who played for much less than millions. more like twentyfive thousand and held a day job in the off season.

Yeah, but when they played for $25,000, bread was five cents a loaf and a 3,000 sq ft home could be had for $20,000!
Back then they played for the love of the game!

Clearly they made good money for 5 or 6 years when they were young. but it broke many of them and even if they had saved very well, it would not take care of what has become of them.
now in twenty years when some guy that made ten million bucks is broke and broke down, they dont get to complain.
