Another way of saying this verse is, I form the light, and I take away light: I make peace and I take away peace.

Maybe God spoke in a way that they would understand for that period of time. They didn't have the scientific knowledge that we have today.

True. And Satan was created as an angel, not as the devil. When he rebelled, causing God to separate Himself from him, as you have already said, now we have evil - the absence of God.

I understand that cold is merely the absence of heat and darkness is the mere absence of light but I do not think that "evil" fits such a category. That would imply that by God removing His presence from somewhere or something, would automatically make that void space "evil".
There may indeed by a non-intelligent, energy-like, component to "evil" but it is probably beyond our understanding (but interesting as I try to wrap my tiny brain around it since the question was asked).

I think you could be right as well. But, remember in scripture darkness equated into evil. I agree there is also evil spirits. That is what the devil has. The thing is that God's presence is everywhere, but we are the ones that walk away from Him thus our denying Him makes us evil. IMO
