My Mom's family is from West Virginia! That is where I trace my 1800's roots to! Some of them are still in Bluefield, but we trace our ancestry back to Lovern, WV.

I can't watch "ROOTS". I tried so a few years back and became too angry to be positive.

I was born in Montgomery and lived in Gauley Bridge as a kid until the navy moved us over seas to Okinawa.

Most of my relatives are in that area. Gauley Bridge is about 40 miles west of Charleston on Rt-60.

What a transition from WV to Okinawa!! lol

So was your father a Corpman stationed at the Naval Hospital @ Camp Lester? I was stationed in Okinawa for 1.5 years, 1996-1997.

What you have said in this post is THE BOTTOM LINE.

It is insulting to Black Americans to somehow think they don't have the intellect to NOT say outrageous things like that.

Whites say totally outrageous things too. Six of one. Half a dozen of another.

I can agree. But it doesn't surprise me when I hear of a few who do.

Hey, Happy Easter. DT, it has been a good conversation really. Some disagreements but honestly, I think we're closer to agreeing than we think. I think that some of us place a stronger emphasis on some things while others place a stronger emphasis on others. But we're within arms reach of each other on this.

Gauley Bridge!!! OMG, that was the most horrible part of the drive before 64 went through there!!!

But it's beautiful. I love the waterfall that's there. They've built it up as a little park now, although I haven't been there for about 10 years. The water is delicious too, and so cold!!

I'll never forget that drive though. When I was a kid (my mom drove from IL to VA twice a year), I would purposely go to sleep around Ashland, KY because I knew what was coming!! I remember crying telling my mom to slow down around those curves! LOL!

But while I love that 64 goes through, I miss the little shops along the way that have probably closed up by now. We used to stop at the Alpine Glass Factory, there were a couple Indian shops, and the Mystery House....haha.

Oh, the memories.
