What about the Notre Dame of Paris, France?
"Each face, each stone of this venerable monument is not only a page of
the history of the country, but also of the history of knowledge and art....
Time is the architect, the people are the builder."
— Victor Hugo, Notre-Dame de Paris
Victor Hugo wrote
The Hunchback of Notre Dame to call attention to the poor condition of the cathedral. It worked. The repairs were made more quickly because of his novel. It is said the windows were broken and treasures had been stolen. He got people's attention with the Hunchback. It didn't fare too well during the French Revolution.
