Re: How to Save Money
Well, I didn't do too well on the tightwad test, but I had a few.
I DID go to the grocery store this week (and Eddie came along). I warned him on the way that I had a bunch of coupons; he doesn't like to mess with taking time for all that. Anyway, when I checked out, my bill was originally $94+ and after the coupons, it was $66+. He was convinced at that point that coupons were a good deal and worth the hassle!
If I made a million dollars a year, I would still get coupons and use them. I love to feel like I'm winning!

Me too! I love coupons, but I try to be very careful not to spend more than generic with brand name + coupon which can easily happen. Sometimes, if the price is the same, I will buy the brand name. And, sometimes, contrary to true tightwaddery, I buy things with coupons for the sheer convenience of the product. But, hey, I do try to have a balance in my life. I do work outside the home and want some time to just plain enjoy life! If things got truly bad, I know how to forego the convenience.

In one of the tightwad gazette books, she tells about having pantyhose with runs in one of the legs on each pair. So in true tightwad style, she cuts off the bad leg just below the panty part on each pair. Then she wears BOTH of the parts that had a good leg left on them. (Yes, I've read the books. NO- I don't have half pairs of hose to wear together to make one good pair.) LOL

LOL! I would just not do this unless I was really, really destitute.
Some of the ideas...I think we need to remember that time is money too. She had six kids at home and stayed home, so she was spending her time finding good ways to save money (not to mention making money finding ways to save money!) I think many ideas have to be adaptable to the situation.
I've never read the Tightwad Gazette until now. I have requested it as a Christmas gift. (I have a library copy right now.)

Don't run the dishwasher or washing machine unless it's full.

I have one of them on my desk. I loaned the first edition to someone who never returned it, or I'd have them both. There are some interesting ideas... but some off the wall crazy stuff that I'd never do.

I have done this before! It just seems to be a waste of a good leg of the panty hose. I have not done in recently, though. I have also used my ruined panty hose to tie up my tomato plants.

I always bought knee highs and then threw out the one with runs and kept the other. I hate pantyhose.

There's a good recycle.
