I believe he decided to pragmatically try to capitalize on the movie's publicity as an outreach tool for sinners, but felt strongly that Apostolics were better off avoiding it.

At least I think that was his position.

I also thought it was very Catholic in its glorification of suffering, as well as a few other elements.

My chief objection was the fact that I wanted the Holy Ghost to ispire my vision of Calvary, not Mel and his Hollywood chronies.
