Does the bible make a distinction between the two?
Yes. I believe it does. You have several types of spirits mentioned in the Bible. You have God (who is a spirit), the holy angels, the dead (both righteous and unrighteous), fallen angels, and unclean spirits. The two types of evil spirits are fallen angels and unclean spirits. Fallen angels "can" possess a person but generally do not. Unclean spirits insanely desire to possess a host to fulfill their lusts and they are typically what we deal with on a regular basis, especially in the realm of possession.

That's my understanding.
God bless.
2 things....
a/ That doesn't really answer the original question of "is there a difference between a person being spirit-possessed, and them possessing a spirit?".
b/ The distinction you're making between "fallen angels and unclean spirits" seems artificial.
Correct me if I'm mistaken on this but: What were those "unclean spirits" before they became "unclean sprits"? Weren't they angels... before they fell... thus they're fallen angels?

Daniel 12:3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars for ever.

Let me try and explain it this way. If a person is possessed they are not in control of their life. The demons control what they do, as the gadrene that was in the graveyard not in his own mind.
A person possessing a spirit could be a person that has a spirit of fear. The spirit of fear doesn't make them go and do anything they don't want to do. It may prevent them from doing something that want to do.
And it would probably be more acturate to say the spirit of fear is oppressing them than them possesing the spirit.
But you can't be POSSESSED and have the Holy Ghost in my opinion. But I think you can have a spirit attached to you. Whether you want to say by oppression or possession.

Ah, I see. I think there is a difference. In my experience, people who are "spirit-possessed" (demon possessed) are under the complete control of the possessing spirit. Then there are those who "possess a spirit" because it's gained a stronghold in their spirit, typically through sin. I believe, based on my experience, that the spirit(s) that a person may possess will work to oppress the individual until it gains complete possession.

No. I don't believe they were... therefore I don't believe they are.

I agree.

"Many Christians do not try to understand what was written in a verse in the Bible. Instead they approach the passage to prove what they already believe."
It's sobering when you see it happen. A spirit gets a stronghold in a person's life and suddenly they're spinning out in sin, confused and suddenly struggling. They slowly fall into complete control of the spirit in question and it isn't long until they are reaping the consequences of sin in their lives and eventual death.
These unclean spirits have no remorse in their unceasing quest for sin, with which they destroy their host.

There is victory for the, thank the Lord.
You know, people can get technical and avow their beliefs about everything, but when something genuinely helps someone and they are truly set free from bondage, who cares WHERE the spirit was, but that the person was helped.
