Why do you think Jesus would tell us to keep our fasts secret?
I think that we garner a closer intimacy with God through fasting. Its a personal thing. Some things aren't meant to be spoken. Our secret devotion with Him is precious.

What do you see as the purpose of fasting?

Seriously........

How much do you think the Apostles fasted?

Acts 13:1 - 3 (KJV) 1 Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Paul state that he was in "fastings often". Peter was fasting when the men can from Cornelious' house. From what I have read, the Jews practiced fasting 2 days a week.

I think we could both over emphasize, and under emphasize fasting. Fasting has its place in the disciplinary life of the believer. It is us putting our own natural appetite aside to reach out and partake of heavenly things. In a nutshell, fasting is simply saying no to our natural, carnal man.
