I am NOT opposed to restoration and forgiveness--I am wholeheartedly for it. I just don't see how restoring the man to his position will help with that. Being restored to a right relationship with God is not the same as becoming a bishop again.
That is part of the problem--people see positions in the church or in the leadership as something to be sought after, and when they have a failure, instead of trying to fix their own hearts, they're just putting all the pieces back together in their lives!
"Uh-oh...I messed up...I can't be a preacher--I'd better apologize to the church so I can be a preacher again." No, apologize to GOD so you can be a Christian again. So there aren't any barriers. So sin doesn't separate you from Him.
