I thought the debate was that the original fathers were establishing a ready militia and that is, in the opinion of some today, what the defining factor is on the "right to bear arms".

But it did not say in order to be a well armed militia you have to be in an armed service

Heller dispenses of that notion, read the majority opinion in that case. The SC clearly states that it is an individual right.
