Re: Harrassed & Detained For Carrying Cash @ Airpo

I guess I'm coming from the perspective of someone who has had to answer these same sorts of questions at traffic stops as a result of profiling. Was it a bit aggravated? Yes. Did I recognize I was being profiled? Yes. However, each situation ended very quickly with the police immediately realizing that there was nothing illegal about me. They were courteous, addressed me as "sir", and in one instance gave me directions. If I had been vague or uncooperative to prove a point, it would have made for some long evenings.

Travelling with cash stashed away does fit a profile. Being vague and uncooperative exasperates it. I'm just saying that we can either be opposed to profiling or not, but we have to be consistent. I don't think we can embrace profiling for some and then get all worked up when we discover that there are profiles that we may fit into.

You got it there.

I was trying to find the post you responded to so I could say about the same thing.

Benjamin Franklin didn't make that statement because he was ignorant of where we are now.

He made that statement because he full well knew the dangers of where we are headed now.

(BTW... Can you believe that you and I are on the same side. It's pretty cool. )
LOL! indeed this is an odd day!

Help me out here, coadie. You know how much I'd love to bash Aquila and his whole liberal world-view...

But where in God's law is there any mention of pocket knives and police stations? Or did I miss something. Help me out.

we see "door jerkers" at grocery stores and gas stations. it really pumps them up to have an old recycled police car with a spot light and a flashing light bar on top.
Training and experience will always be a problem when anything "new" is rolled out.

What's a "door jerker?"

im opposed.

and I also think when you were profiled, you did the right thing.... but i also think I would have tried to get the name and badge number of the profiling police officer and filed a complaint.

but thats just me. Being a white guy who doesnt really have to face that kind of thing I do recognize it is very easy for me to say that. I am sorry you have had to go thru that kind of thing.

Here is a lengthy study that shows the TSa contractors have no accountibility.

the other issue is class envey. These are very unskilled jobs and are ripe for folks that have a bad attitude towards those that can afford to travel, fly and do so reguularly.

I agree that old Ben must have witnessed real horrors. Besides, wasn't it you who was complaining last year about how that fascist Bush was using 9/11 to control the nation by fear?

Funny what an election can do for your views on government.

And for those who are devotees of the false messiah Alex Jones and his "Info Wars"... Ben's key words here were "essential liberties..." Standing in a line a little longer is not giving up an "essential liberty."

A free spell checker?!!! I don't know that was available.

Is there a free grammar checker as well?

Ferd, I honestly don't see profiling in principle as a completely bad thing that should never be responsibly applied. Just being frank, if terror attacks are being overwhelmingly carried out by Middle Eastern men of a certain age, then I think it is irresponsible to completely ignore that. Having said that, I go back to the position that I cannot hold that view, but get upset when I fit a profile.

The key to me is how the situation is handled. Just for the record, some of times I have been profiled, it was by black cops. The questions that they ask me are just different than the questions they would even ask my dad for example. Now, I'm not saying law enforcement should ignore everybody else and focus on their profiles (particularly when it comes to drug trafficking as that is a multi-ethnic effort), but I think that there is some room for some consideration of statistics and clear trends.

There are obviously some bad cops and bad TSA officials, but in my situations the officers were almost immediately mindful that I was not up to no good and treated me that way.

He admitted being refused entry into a police station because he had a concealed pocketknife.

When I studied medicine, at night the "security people" did not carry guns but went door to door and checked to see if doors were locked. I heard nurses calling them "door jerkers". One night shift one came into ER and we treated him for gunshot wounds in the bottom. I had had a few converstations with him and he being short was not elgible to be a cop. He always talked about heroic fights taking out drunks etc and we never saw him around when there was trouble. I had nick named him cherio kid for his heroic deeds. He had gotten off work and accidentily discharged his gun and hit himself. In the buttocks. The nurses took his history and asked what kind of gun battle he had been in.

He was just practicing a quick draw.I took care of him and he was so embarrassed, he quit and no one ever saw him again. Apparently rumors got out and people kept checking in his room to see if he was OK and ask what happened.
