Around here, if you want the absence to be excused, you must supply a doctor's note.  You don't have to get permission to miss--I've never done that. Just a simple notification phone call will do, as a courtesy. But it won't be an excused absence without the official note. And they do have to attend 180 days of school (field trips and special days count) per year.
