I really hope someone got video that exonerates this police officer and makes the nutty professor and president look stupid.
Race relations were not helped by the Presidents statements or the nutty professors allegation against the officer. Rather, they only serve to prove that in some cases the cry "racism" is well overstated and grossly misrepresented.
I'd rather not get into BHO and Bill Ayers. This is about the police officer and allegations of him being racist made by the scholar, Mr. Gates.
I think they are doing a good enough job without having video's to prove it.
The interview that I read by the officer I think made it clear to me that even after he knew the man's identity he was tying to get him out of the house so he could make sure there was not someone there that should not be. The officer seemed to be trying to do his job when the home owner took offense to it.
Personally after what I have read I side with the policeman on this. The professor and the president all owe the man an apology. I do not blame the officer for not apologizing for doing his job.
I agree Cindy. I'm just saying that once they saw definitively that they are mistaken about an alleged crime, they should not have arrested him for being irate.
On the surface this appears true! What we don't know exactly is what the good professor did to provoke the police. It will be interesting to hear what the black policeman in the picture has to say!
I have a feeling that this may be a case of race baiting.

Maybe so - race and class.
I have a feeling if this was a poor white boy who did not have the ear of liberal universities, the President, and "civil rights" leaders they would still be in jail awaiting a hearing. I have a feeling they dropped the charges because of who and what this man is.
That might be the real story.

The title of this thread would have been a bit more accurate something like this,
"Police officer confronted by stupid, beligerant, egotistical, racist, (did I say stupid?) home owner."
You know what would be poetic justice? Next month (or so) a male was trying to break into this same house, and the neighbor did not call the police for fear of all this type of profile nonsense again. I wonder what this (ahem) professor would have to say about that?
This continues to look better for the police officer and worse for the President and racist, opportunist scholar.
I understand this scholar may be well respected ... however his actions now betray his integrity. First impressions are lasting, and for me, I will never be able to take a word coming out of this guys mouth as anything but tinged with racism and opportunism.
This scholar made a huge error in judgment. He's accused an officer who's very well respected by both blacks and whites, who tried desperately to save the life of a black NBA star years ago by giving him CPR - who, by all accounts, followed protocol and did his job.
This scholar was NOT arrested for burglary or breaking and entering his home ...
He WAS arrested because he couldn't keep his big, racist mouth shut and instead of thanking the officers for following up and making sure his home was secure - he seeks to create racial tension and accuses the officer of being a racist, white male.
PBS, Harvard and his publishers should drop kick this clown to the curb. "You don't know who you're messing with!" Actually the scholar didn't know who HE was messing with ... a good officer who was simply doing his job.
Prax, I'll read more info as it is released. I know we can go around in circles. I'm just saying that at some point before he was arrested, he did in fact provide satisfacory ID. The two sides will undoubtedly present their sides differently, but he did at some point before his arrest identify himself as the homeowner and someone innocent of any wrong doing. At that point, the officer was operating "with the knowledge of a man merely coming home to his house". At that point even if he is irate, you apologize for the mistake and leave in my opinion. I have not seen anything that would suggest that he would have been a danger to anyone at that point.
I guess I'm just not sure who was being "Protected and Served" by his arrest.
According to the report:
After the officer had the id in his hand and knew he was affiliated with Harvard, he called the university police. Then he radioed his findings to the ECC and prepared to leave. Gates then asked again for his name, he tried to give it to him when Gates started calling him a racist officer. This happened twice. The third time he told him he was going outside and would answer any further questions out there. Due to Gates yelling and the acoustics in the house making it worse he couldn't communicate with the ECC inside, so he went outside. He warned Gates twice that his behavior was out of hand before he was arrested. He had the handcuffs removed from behind his back and handcuffed him in front because they were hurting him. He also went in and got his cane for him to walk with. He then asked him if he would like them to secure his front door. Interestingly enough he told the officer that the door was unsecurable because of a previous break in attempt. A maintenance man from Harvard showed up that Gates was familiar with so the officer asked if he would be comfortable with that man securing his door. Gates agreed to this. Gates then requested that he be transported to the station in a police cruiser.
I have been racially profiled by police twice, once involving a gun, it does exist, trust me. And I am not a card player, but if I told the story, some here would automatically side with the police.
No one here knows the truth but those involved, one is lying, of course, YOU all know who it is, lol.
