So we should set murderers and rapist free? Asking why we punish and how we punish is an important question. I doubt you really think that people shouldn't be punished.

Since you are pressing the issue of punishment with me, I would say there are consequences to our actions. If my child does something I said not to do, I would not use the word punish, but discipline. Discipline is supposed to train people, it has a purpose. I think of punishment as just making someone feel bad.

Gotta fix that last sentence... I think when people want to punish someone it is to make the person that did something to feel bad so that the person punishing can feel good. ;-)

Why we punish determines to a large extent how we punish. So how we answer those questions are important.
