What do you think John meant by "walk in darkness"?

Must we confess our sins to be forgiven and cleansed from all UNrighteousness? Or is it optional?

What do you think John meant by "walk in darkness"?

Must we confess our sins to be forgiven and cleansed from all UNrighteousness? Or is it optional?
Walk as in lifestyle. The idea is keep on walking. Confession in this passage is in a general sense just as sin is in a general sense. I confessed on here tonight that I sin. It doesn't even tell us who to confess them to. To God? Others? both?
