Not really. Marxists and Communists advocate violent overthrow of established social democracies and free markets for the estasblishment of a centralized institutional government and body of laws that eradicate the free market and all private property. In addition Communists would eradicate all religious systems.
Socialists believe strongly in democracy and advocate democratic social policies to serve a free people. The areas they believe need socialized change are democratically addressed through the body politic without violent revolution. They regulate free markets in an effort to bring social harmony and fair play to the business landscape (their success at this is highly debateable). Socialists do believe in private propety and socialists embrace religion and it's free expression if not simply for cultural reasons.

Socialist Countries: Canada, Israel, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, Australia, Mexico, ....
Obama does have socialist leanings... but to say he's a Communist is a blantant misrepresentation of hyper-paranoid minds.
