If you do a recovery I would not expect to save my data as they often format the HD. You can though back up all your data files to something. An DVD or thumb drive just in case
So, I would have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch?

If simply backing up, back up ONLY the actual data. Reinstall the software from their original CD/DVD's.

If you don't clone the original HD, yes. If you do not have the original software that came with the PC, including the OS, you can get it from the company.

BTW what makes you think it's the HD?

Check to make sure it's not a fan that is making that noise

Do you run updated anti-virus/anti spyware?

Also a background running program like a virus scanner will make the HD run and if it's a bloatware program like Norton it may use a lot of system resources.

You should be able to go into taskmanager and processes and see what is hogging CPU

It's firefox

I suggest the two symptoms are unrelated. Do what RW and myself suggested earlier, see if the whine is really coming from the HD and not a fan

Your system could also be over heating. It is very important to open the panel and blow out all the dust using either a can of compressed air or air compressor.

AND check fans. The dust can weigh down the fans so they are working over time and not moving as fast as they should. Ball bearings go bad too, no oil. Especially the CPU fan, and make sure there are no loose cables that can stop a fan
