He was talking about sexual sins against your spouse. And he had a good point. If you love your spouse like you are supposed to truly love them, you wouldn't want to hurt them. And if you loved God like you should, you wouldn't sin against Him. That's a pretty startling thing to realize, IMO. Mainly, because I think we throw the word "love" around very carelessly. We say, "I love tacos, this song, shoes, etc." and we don't realize the depth of meaning.

Of course, sinning begins with choosing to walk after the flesh and not the spirit. When we are walking after the spirit, we are not fulling the desires of the flesh. Our love can wax cold when we are carnal. Notice that wax doesn't harden right away, it is a process. Obviously, the longer that you walk after your selfish desires, you can do grave damage and love just is not involved in that kind of hurt. It has to be pure selfishness on our part.

But our issue with sin, I believe, is much deeper than love.

By the Spirit we can fully love, or are able to fully love. But by ourselves, unfortunately, love is not all we need.

I agree with your basic premise though. Especially the last part of that final paragraph.
