The case in point is "Dr" Betty Martini, the self-styled leader of the anti-aspartame movement, who, thanks to her grandstanding all over the internet, mostly in the form of the flame wars she gets into on usergroups and in the "press bulletins" wherein she uses her phony "doctorate" in order to try and give herself the air of credibility that she sorely lacks, has set herself up as the would-be "general" of the aspartame activists.
The problem is that her phony "doctorate" was given to her by Carey, who also regaled himself with a few of them. His shell "institutions" and such are just his creations on flakey websites done with an old, outdated version Microsoft FrontPage and not much more. It was in the name of one of these fantasy institutions that Betty's "Honorary Doctor of Humanities" was bequeathed. Due to the chiding she gets from people over that nonsense, she puts something like "PhD.Hum.Hon." at the end of her name when she uses the "Dr" at the beginning. However, when she wants to submit a post to some forum wherein those of real doctors are preferred, she conveniently drops the alphabet soup part.
