I've heard of those dogs!

Re: My Puppy Is...

I have an eight year old long haired miniature dachshund that will still pee and poop in the house. I will never have another dachshund. He is cute and that is it.

No. Just hang in there with it and be consistent. That's the biggest key - consistency!

Re: My Puppy Is...

Jermyn,
This is the instruction paper from the first week of dog training school. My dog died, suddenly, three days before graduating. Probably a heart attack or brain aneurysm.

Anyway, here you go. Please note that I did exactly what they told me NOT to do and my dog stopped "eliminating" in the house. I didn't hit him, but I did spank him. They are just like children, so I treated him like a child. The first time that I knew it was way too quiet, I went to check on him and he was sitting at the back door waiting to go out! That was a marker day!!!

Week One:

It's also just as important to know what NOT to do during the potty training process.
  • Never hit your dog for soiling in the wrong place.
  • Never rub your dog's nose in the mistake.
  • Never correct your dog unless you catch him in the act.
  • Don't use newspaper; it's not absorbent enough and can stain your floors.

Using a Crate During Potty Training

You can use a crate to help potty train. Dogs usually won't eliminate in their crate unless they are left in the crate for longer than they can physically "hold it". Make sure the crate is the right size. If it's too big, your dog might sleep in one section and eliminate in another.

Potty Training Pads

You can teach your dog to go in a certain spot in the house by using potty training pads. These are absorbent pads thta are treated with a scent to promote elimination. Do not use newspaper; it's difficult to pick up, and it won't protect your floors. It can also stain your flooring and may actually teach your dog to eliminate wherever he sees newspaper lying around.
