Re: This message scares me??

oh, the minister totally wasn't saying we couldn't have recreational time, just to put God first...
I try to look at it like is this something Jesus could come along and do with me? if not, then its prob. something you shouldn't be doing.
I think when we hear certain messages it can go to heart so much that you feel like you should always be in God... and some preachers aren't explaining the balance... they are so into exhorting to read and pray that it can be taken the wrong way that that is all we should be doing.
I think Corvet is wondering, did he read the Bible or pray enough before its ok to enjoy his things... (tell me if I'm wrong) So we just have to have enough sensitivity to God to know ourselves? Sitting here now, I just realized I have not picked up my bible today. I just have gotten out of the habit... and now I feel lousy that I realize i didn't put God first like the message said. but i should not beat myself up and just get off the computer and go read my bible now? (we usually read some together before we go to sleep)
well, gonna go and read now... (i love you hubby and Jesus loves you too, do what is right and don't be so hard on yourself either...) krt

2. IMO, this is an old, manipulative tactic. There's nothing wrong with reading books, looking at magazines, listening to the radio, watching tv, OR for that matter--gardening, mowing the lawn, grocery shopping, going for a walk, checking the mail, golfing, running errands, and working a public job.

I agree--put Jesus first. That doesn't mean that you're not allowed to do anything else besides pray and read the Bible.

Why don't you pray and read the word as much as you feel you and or your family need. Be led by the Spirit to pray for others and enjoy your free time

Well That is exactly what we want and usually do. There really isn't more that needs to be said here on this post. Thanks for all the responses. Bless you all.

I think the problem here is the Corvette. I recommend you give it to me, and buy yourself a Prius or possibly a Ford Focus.

I mean where is the line? How much should we be reading and praying 24 hrs a day?. Am I wrong, if so correct me please cause I do want to be right with God and know I have a lot of things to work on. Does anyone know what I am talking about. Has anyone heard of a message like this before? When I heard this message I was very stressed.

If this is true then who is really saved???
I believe that one should spend time in God's Word in some way every day. If you've read your novel, watched television, read the news paper, etc. but haven't spent time in God's Word, there's an issue. But if you've spent some time in God's Word (at least something like 15 minutes), I don't think all those things just mentioned are bad.

Buy a devotional. There are many in Christian book stores that have wonderful thoughts and insights. A daily reading from a devotional should suffice at the very least.

I am glad you chimed in here aquila, but why 15 minutes, why not 30 or 45 minutes. Where is the line at? Where do I have to be where I can say, hey I am spending time with God enough to do other things and not feel guilt like the original post. Compare to someone like Charles Stanley where he does rebuke, but does it on a much caring, concerned level than the other. Where I would be more prone to do it Charles Stanley way than the other. I just felt controlled and not good enought when I heard that message on Sunday.
