When you say fancier effects, are you referring to dancing arches for example? That stuff is pretty easy to build (and cheap) if you are the least bit handy. I want to build 4 arches for my display this year.
I've already built 2 fans - I was surprised just how easy they were to make. I think each fan cost me about $5 in PVC and $2 for a U bolt. Throw in a few more dollars for some PVC cemet and cleaner plus 800 christmas lights and you've got a pretty fancy effect that can do quite a few neat things.

I bought my FM transmitter as a kit, cheaper that way. I use the FM transmitter year round to broadcast my favorite music without interruption throughtout the entire house and yard.
