Actually I went to the church as well when the Lawrance Family sang at the church in 1978.

My dad's church was in High Point Ohio which is near Cincinnati.

Have you ever heard my uncle.

John Laun preach?

One of his daughters is married to Danny Durham.

I remember Buzzy and Doris Durham. I think they had two sons, David and Danny. I remember when Donna was born. Doris had some problems with the birth. Donna married Frank Mink, a friend of my sons. Last I knew Donna was estranged from her parents. She and Frank were living in the Pontiac MI area and he was involved with the Apostolic university that was started there a couple of years ago. Donna and Frank were going to Bro. Paslay's church before they moved to Michigan. I think there was some kind of fallout between Frank Mink and Bro. Paslay about some funding. I think one considered it a gift and the other considered it a loan.

When I first came to Cincinnati in 1957 I came with Ken Wilson and Dale Simpson. Dale later married Doris Durham's sister, Shirley Bantley. I lived with Ken Wilson's family for a while. His brother Jack (married to Shirley and had a son named John plus an older daughter) wound up staying with the church and Bro. Buller when the Paslays left. At one time Dale rented a basement in Hillsboro, OH (I think this was 1959) and we went out there and painted, etc. and held meetings. I preached for him for a three night meeting but nobody came. Later he was unable to pay the rent and gave that up.

I know where High Point is. One time some of us from the Carthage Apostolic Church went to a park there and held a meeting but there was no response. We had singing and I preached. That summer we went to a couple different areas of Cincinnati and once to Norwood across from Surrey Square and held street meetings. I don't even remember when that was but I guess it was the early nineteen seventies.

You know you are bringing many things back to my memory. I talked to my Mom tonight. I asked her about you. SHe said the name Jim Ellis did ring a bell. I do remember now the Durhams did have antother son name David.

I remember when we lived there that he had some problems.

Thanks for catching up.

I am sure we have been in church together in the past...

Your name and the mention of your Dad starting a church in High Point with the Durhams in late 1976 do not trigger any memories. In 1976 I was going to the Carthage Apostolic Church. I was sectional youth leader for the ALJC. I preached in some of the Tuesday night youth meetings, plus some times filled in for Bro. Sizemore preaching or teaching. Some times my wife sang. One song she sang often was "The Family of God." We had three sons and two daughters. We left that church in 1978 some time (it might have been 1979). I had grown a mustache and Bro. Sizemore preached on a Sunday night, "The Bible says that a man should be clean shaven." We never went back.

During the time of turmoil at the Montgomery Road church, some folks started coming to Bro. Sizemore's church. Since the church pastored by Bro. Sizemore was a split from Bro. Curts' church in 1945, maybe there was some kind of a kindred spirit between those who left in 1945 and those who left in 1968.

What little I have heard about Cincinnati is that when Bro. Curts came here in 1925 he started with 12 or 13 people and his new church was a split off another OP group here in Cincinnati. I don't really know who brought the Jesus' name message to the Cincinnati area and when it came. My father-in-law who died in 2000 at the age of 79 had mentioned childhood memories of baptisms in the Ohio River. Perhaps because Bro. Curts started with a split group, he may have "reaped" that split in 1945 when some folks left him and started a church called The Full Gospel Church, When I came here in 1957 that group was disdainfully spoken of as "the church on the hill" because they were located on Vine Street hill. Shortly after I came here the "Church on the Hill" also known as the Full Gospel Church, built a new church in the Carthage area of Cincinnati and changed their name to the Carthage Apostolic Church. Their pastor was Bro. Joe David Sizemore from January 1951 until his death in January 2001. Then Bro. Curts' church had that other split in 1968 when the Paslays and some people left. There was fellowship between the Paslays' church and Bro. Sizemore's church. The Paslays pastored in a rented church on Blue Ash Road and then bought the building on Kemper Road where they remained until they built the place on Kenn Road. By the way, I live just a couple of miles from the Kenn Road church but have only been there once and that was for a funeral for my wife's cousin. My wife's mother was going to Bro. Paslay's church when she died in 1997 so folks from that church came to our house and fixed and brought food and Bro. Paslay was in charge of the funeral. Bro. Sizemore's church had a split a few years ago (don't remember when) and a group left and formed the Greater Apostolic Church in Loveland. Since then another young man left and had a church in Fairfield, OH (only a few miles from where I live) but that is no longer in existence. The Carthage Apostolic Church built a new building and is now the Covenant Apostolic Church. After Bro. Sizemore's death in 2001, Bro. Shelly Hendricks became pastor and not it is listed as a UPC church. Another young man who left Covenant Apostolic started a new church about three and one half years ago in a meeting room at a local motel in Sharonville. He started with about a dozen people and now has grown to about 50. My wife and I plan on visiting that assembly this coming Sunday. They meet in LaQuinta motel off Sharon Road at I75 and they are called Christ's Community. That's about all I know about the UPC here in the Cincinnati area. I just read in another post on this thread that Bro. Eckstadt's dad started a church here in late 1976 but I don't ever remember hearing about it.

Bro. Sizemore actually passed away in January of 2003

But, the Bullers weren't there when we left in 1963 or 64. Maybe I've seen a picture of her.

I missed the bolded part the first time. As I said, during my four years at Montgomery Road, I came across a lot of the validated information as to what did bring about that split. If your don't know, then you are correct...you don't want to know. You were pretty close however when you talked of reaping.

Maybe I've got my dates wrong.
I just checked a book that the Covenant Apostolic Church put out in 1995 for their 50th anniversary.
They started in 1945 (at least I had that right) with home prayer meetings and 17 people. They grew and organized with a constitution and three elders -Wallace Isaacs, Neal Wheeler, and Curtis Young, who were also trustees; plus a secretary -Roy Hempel; and a treasurer -Elmer Cagle. Then they started meeting Sis. Winston's basement. The first pastor was E.G. Lowe until he left in 1947. During the time Bro. Lowe was pastor, they purchased a building at 2506 Vine Street. This was known by people at Bro. Curts' church as "the church on the hill." In 1947, James Verdier was chosen as pastor. He left in October, 1952 and returned to Benton, Arkansas. Bro. Joe David Sizemore became pastor on January 3, 1953 (I had that date wrong). He was 21 years old and his wife was 19. In 1960 they broke ground for a new building and they changed their name to Carthage Apostolic Church. In 1980 they had a ground breaking for a new building, with an open house in 1981 and dedication in 1982. I'm not sure when their son David became asst. pastor. Bro. Sizemore's health deteroriated and when he died in January 2003 they had purchased a home in Florida and were going to move their. Shortly before his death, his son David resigned as pastor and then assumed pastorate of a church in Florida.

Sorry about messing up the 1951 and 2001 dates.
