Question for you Guys!

When you asked your father-in-law for his daughter's hand in marriage did he give you any words of wisdom?

Any saying that has stuck with you through the years?

Or when your future son-in-law asked for your daughter's hand in marriage, did you give any advice or charge for him?

I'm not a guy-- but I can remember what my hubby said that my dad told him...

He said "Son, I give you my blessing--- but if you EVER hurt my daughter-- I'll kill you with my bare hands!"

My husband said he still believes till this day that Dad meant every word of it.

I married an old maid who was from a divorced home. Her father had not been the head of her household since she was a teenager and she was out on her own for 10 years before I married her.

For those reasons I don't believe I asked her father for her hand in marriage. I remember making a special trip to his house to tell him about our engagement but I don't think I asked him for her hand in marriage.

I asked my NOW SIL,
did he believe he saw in my daughter a true witness that she "feared God"?
and
did he believe that my daughter would see in him, the spirit of a man who "feared God".

I told him my reason for asking this was that any vow entered into before God, concerning two becoming one flesh, would certainly need a genuine shared agreement for who would arbitrate the contentious 'death of self' that is part of God's perfecting process.

My husband talked to my dad. I remember my dad laughing a bit in surprise when TB approached him. I just asked him if anything stood out to him that my dad said and he said ........

"Yes. I remember him asking me how we were going to live and if I was going to be able to look after you."

No wonder for my dad's concern.. We married between his 2nd and 3rd years of Bible School and on top of that I was marrying a preacher.

My Father-In-Law told me to be half the man my father was and I would do all right. He told me if I ever laid a hand on her it was as if I hit him directly.

He told me to treat my future wife not a possession but a partner in life and love.

He told me to start praying for my children that she and I were to have from day one of our marriage.

I can tell you one of the first things we did after we said "I Do", was to pray for our future children.

It has been 20 years and we are stronger today then ever before.
