Truth be told... she's been whining about this ever since she got the letter in the mail!
Are you folks feeling my pain now?

Okay, so including my kids in the experience makes me feel better about it.
In all seriousness, I'm aware that this is my civic duty, and unless they decide they don't need me for some reason, I'll give it my best effort. I'm not really the type to give them any lame excuses or act crazy so they'll dismiss me.
Mr. Phillips: What I said to you was (and I quote) - "Well, if I have to go for jury duty, I hope it's a serial killer." + a little whining.
You've all talked me down off the cliff. I'm no longer interested in getting out of my Duty.

First, I think it is sad that you find such duty an inconvenience that you shouldn't be bothered with. It is your duty.
Second, many of you have confused what takes place during voir dire as opposed to those being declared eligible by system to possibly sit on the trial.
Depending on the practices of the court you are in there may not be much in the way of excusing jurors. In some states there are limited peremptory strikes and only for actual bias can a juror be excused.
Do your duty or don't ever complain about the injustices of our court system again.
OOOoooooo, you tell'em, Baron!!
I've been 3 or 4 times and upon my revelation of my occupation, I've been immediately dismissed each time. I actually thought it would be fun to do, but no chance.
I've been told it's because ministers are very unpredictable....either way too gracious or way too judgmental. True?

Not sure how it works in your area, but just because you are called to jury duty doesn't mean you'll be on the jury.
When I went, we were all put into a room (there were about 150 of us) - - when they needed a jury, they'd come in and call out names, those people would leave and the rest of us would continue to sit there (I read a book and watched the weirdness of human nature all around me).
I sat there for four days and wasn't called until the fourth day. Walked to the other place to sit on the jury and they dismissed the case before we even entered the court room. Didn't have to return on the fifth day because I had technically been on a jury.

When I was in Harris County, Tx you came for one day only. They only have over a million or so people to pick from daily.
I have been in my new area 3 years and have never received a jury summons.
I have been picked for a jury twice. One was civil the other criminal. Civil can be very BORING!

I always wanted to do it as well, but last time around the case was this guy who got shot in a bar fight at an establishment known to be a rough place was suing the bar owner because the barmaid didn't keep him from getting shot.
Asks the Attorney for the defense: "Mr. Atkinson, hearing what you have of this case, do you have any opinions?
Mr. Atkinson: "Well, you go into a place like *establishment in question* you get what you get"
I got called for jury duty--Feb. 4--and I don't want to go! I don't have time for it, I don't want to do it, I'll be bored out of my skull and I have MUCH better things to do with my time!
How do I get out of it?
Is it possible?
Why couldn't they have called my husband? Why can't I send someone in my place? WHY don't they allow you to find your own substitute?
I got out of the last jury duty by laughing out loud when the DA asked the panel a general question. He asked something like, "Have you ever been bullied..." or some such overly generalized question. Of course, I had to show up and all just to get to that point.
And, you ought to be ashamed of yourself for being so selfish! "I have MUCH better things to do with my time..." !!!???!!!
MissyB: "Oooh! Look at me! I don't have time for a democracy. I don't have time for civil justice. I don't have time to ensure that my neighbors and my loved ones live in a free and open society... I'd rather do my nails..."

I stayed out because I figured sooner or later your true colors would show.
People are quick to indict our judicial system as either corrupt or incompetent.
As one of the few who have been on both sides of capital murder cases and every type case in-between I can attest to havoc wrought by citizens of common sense dodging their duty.
Many cases have no business in court, of those that do our jury system is foundational to our justice system. Dodging jury duty is akin to taking for granted your right and privilege to vote for your leaders and laws.
Hope you have a positive experience Abi, but regardless feel good about doing the right thing.
