Why do we need proof? Who are we proving to?
If we have the fruits of the Spirit in our lives, isn't that proof?

1) The Spirit of God indwells a person BEFORE they believe, else they would not call upon the Lord Jesus Christ.
Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Joh 6:45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
Joh 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.
Joh 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
2) Evidence of the Spirit of God in a person's life, you ask?
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.
Do you have the evidence, bishop?

Receiving the Spirit is a prerequisite to calling on Jesus.
1Co 12:3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit brings conviction to the sinner, and also brings faith to believe the gospel, but He does not indwell them (make them his home) until they repent and believe.

No doubt the Spirit brings conviction to the sinner, I agree with you on that. If they haven't received the Holy Spirit then they aren't going to confess Jesus as Lord.

The Jews were convicted of killing their Messiah. When they asked "What shall we do?" It was not a question about salvation. They were asking what can they do to be cleared of this charge. Peter told them to save themselves from "this untoward generation," the generation that would receive judgment for rejecting Christ.

Even if that was the context of their question, the answer Peter gave covers the sin of killing their Messiah and every other sin they had committed. Peter's answer was indeed about salvation. Else, Peter never told them how to be saved.
