The funny thing is that what you are describing as "conservatism" used to be called "classical liberalism", and the conservatives were those wanting to keep the monarchy, the state church, etc...
If you think about it, modern liberals, when it comes to governments, are actually the "old conservatives" wanting to setup a really strong government and a dominant religion that subdues everything else: atheism, worship of science and technology as what will set us "free", self definition of morals, and oppression in the name of "tolerance".
