I love that song!....Here's an easy way to play it in C from Scott, the piano guy:

Back in the 90s, I worked with a group of kids who used to love to sing that song. I almost posted the movie clip leading up to the song but didn't want to offend anyone. SO, here is just the song...not by Bill Withers himself, but a fairly good version. I've heard a much better live version lately!

Our band opened up with "Lean on Me" today! I thought it was funny, after just posting on this thread.

Maybe someone from your band was reading this thread.

I don't like when they rewrite lyrics to make a song Christian. Makes it seem like we can't come up with original material...

Plus, they are usually lame.

It has been my experience that God can do amazing things with "lame".

Why borrow from the world to get your material? Either use it at face value, or come up with something original. So, what - Highway to Heaven (the song - not the TV show) glorifies God, or does it just remind everyone that it's a pale imitation of AC/DC's Highway to Hell?

I agree that God can do amazing things with lame, but that doesn't mean we have to shoot for lame.

Exactly!

I have an incredible problem with mediocrity in the world of Christian 'this' and Christian 'that'. There was a thread a short while ago discussing Christian theme parks.... Unless you (meaning the people who are building it) are prepared to go all the way, my advice is DON'T DO IT. Go to Disney World or EPCOT center. Don't cheapen Christianity with a cheap knock off.
I also feel this way about music and books. I remember stepping into the typical christian bookstore during the 80's and 90's and absolutely hating the cheap softcover style that most books had. I've come to associate "cheap" books with christian books. Meanwhile Waldenbooks and Barnes&Nobles had REAL hardcover.
Don't even get me started on christian movies. While there have been one or two that were not bad, there have been nearly NONE that are GREAT (the Passion of the Christ being perhaps the one lone exception).

Re: secular music being used in church services.

To be honest with you if I walked into a church that we wrote a ac/dc song and heard it being played I would. turn around and walk.out.

I think it was David and the Giants that reworked Highway to Hell into Highway to Heaven.
