Out at sea is the best place to be - especially if you're a boat - when a tsunami threatens. The deep water means that the energy of the wave is extended along a deeper column of water and there are no rocks to crash against. All you notice is a slight bump, along with all of the other bumps and movements.
I'm posting much later, after the fact, and it does appear that the wave energy dispersed in a manner that was considerably less harmful than the 1960 Chilean quake that sent a tsunami which wiped out a good part of Hilo, HI.
