We used to square dance as hardcore conservative Mennonites. Seemed quite harmless to me and still does.
I think alot of folks have images of smoky bars and alcohol or gyrating pelvises at a rock concert, but it need not be that way.
I think Jesus danced, don't you?
Your thoughts?
P.S. As a side topic, do you think Jesus was pretty big on Shockamoo during worship services?

Re: Dancing: Ever acceptable outside Shockamoo?
So, when the Bible tells us to praise the Lord with the timbrel and dance in Psalm 150:4, and to praise His Name in the dance in Psalm 149:3, and that there is a time to dance in Ecclesiastes 3:4 it is in reference to Jewish dancing like in this video? And when we read about Miriam grabbing a tambourine and leading the women in dancing in Exodus 15:20-21 it is like the dancing in this video? And when we read about David dancing before the Lord with all his might in 2 Samuel 6:14 it is like the Jewish dancing in this video?
In the New Testament we are told to worship the Lord with Psalms, and hymns, etc so we would expect to see the same kind of instruments and the same kind of dancing in the NT church that it speaks about in Psalms?

Does dancing "in the Spirit" look different when it is to the beat of a drum (like the Pentecostals who are called "drum jumpers") than it does if it is done with blue grass or with rock or with rap or whatever?
Ever been in an Apostolic/Pentecostal mosh pit?

I figure dancing in the spirit is a response to the Spirit rather than to music. So it is probably not to the beat of anything, more often than not. That is how it was/ is for me.

I doubt Miriam or David danced like these men.
I don't think the hora was around then...but, I'm sure however they danced it was beautiful and unto the Lord.

I like that stuff Prax! As I said visions of immodest gyrations have clouded many folks' thoughts on "dancing". That's too bad.

I have "danced" on stage a bit... even danced with a girl in a street show at Disneyland a few years back.
My girls all danced in a recent parade while we blasted out Chim-Chimney from Mary Poppins!

Re: Dancing: Ever acceptable outside Shockamoo?
I believe one can dance in the spriit. I'm actually sure I've done so before. I was not in a trance (that doesn't mean no one ever is) and I was able to stop when I wanted to stop. It reminded me of singing/speaking in tongues. Here's the thing, I had to begin the dance so some of it had to be just me and not all in the spirit.

Is there scriptural precedent?
I suppose it's possible to do anything inspired and lost in the presence of God. I've done it. I've also worked myself up before, when it would have been healthier to just learn to enjoy dancing as it is -- a pure celebration.
