Really?
Somehow I don't follow your logic. Because there is a Los Angeles there must be a Sacramento. Naaaaa. Saying a literal place exists does not mean there is another equal but opposite place.

Exactly.
However, we can know that hell is both spoken of in figurative terms but also literal terms (see my prior posts). The figurative language is to help convey the devastation of this idea/place/concept called hell. I'd wager it's worse than the word pictures used to describe.
But neither does that mean I necessarily buy the idea that there is a literal pit of fire with flame curling up where people burn forever. Just like I don't believe heaven is so simple as rich mansions and gold, buffett lines and cloud napping. It's MORE than those word pictures. It's essential unity with God, where hell is eternal separation from God. What that looks like exactly, we only have an idea, and it sounds pretty bad.

Re: Has Hell Disappeared?
Amazing how anyone could say its not profitable to teach the foundation doctrine of eternal judgment. If it were not of God and unprofitable Yeshua would not have taught it. He felt it was essential to warn people to flee from it. A Christian would not want to insult Jesus by saying his teaching was not good. If we ourselves dont teach it we are ashamed of his words.

Let me add that being ashamed of his words is not the issue but do we really have the true understanding of his words is the crux of the matter.

How is it the crux of the matter when the topic is whether or not it should be spoken of?

Actually the topic is whether it has disappeared... whether it IS spoken of. Not whether it should be or not.

Well actually it's both. By implication that was the authors point...it isn't being addressed anymore or enough and he obviously thinks it should

Re: Has Hell Disappeared?
John, in fact, seems to be telling us that it is wrong to "fear hell" and that it is wrong to inflict this "fear" (phobos) on others.

Re: Has Hell Disappeared?
I do want everyone to know that I believe in an actual hell as outlined in scripture. But I don't believe that the God wants us to come to Him because of that fear. But because He loves us so much that we want to love and please Him.

Re: Has Hell Disappeared?
What in this world, or the world to come could be soo terrible that God would send his own son to die for us so that we could be saved from whatever fate awaited us?
