just a thought
Once pride sets in ... the remaining steps may happen successively or simultaneously .... yet usually the drifting is GRADUAL.

The self-absorbed person allows Laziness to set in ... why should I pray? Why should I do this or that? Relying on the flesh and not walking in the Spirit.

The backslider ... no longer is bold in his/her faith ... He/she is ashamed of the gospel ... Cowardice sets in.

The backslider having distanced himself w/ his identity in Christ ... begins to fall in love w/ the things of the world ... Wordliness becomes the idol to replace God.

Finally, if the backslider ... is not careful he/she repudiates or denies God altogether.

He 2:1-3

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. 2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.

The gifts of God are surely free and based only upon grace.

Here is a song that was popular a few years back. 3.5 MB mp3 format.

I have been sitting here thinking. How many backsliders do we have sitting in our churches. I know I ant be the only one. It seems churches have the idea that if you are at church things are ok, and it is so easy to just go along and put on the everythings ok face

What about the mistake of learning how to turn God 'on' and 'off' to fit your situation. Some are convicted in the move of God and then learn how to 'override' that conviction when other things come calling...

Surely that's a mistake many backsliders make. The reason it's so dangerous, outside of playing with God, is that you learn to use God to appease your conscience instead of returning to Him with your whole heart.

Sitting on a pew ... preaching behind a pulpit ... or refusing to go to church ... does not make one immune from backsliding ...

We all must realize that this walk requires a daily love relationship ... trusting on HIM AND WHOLE HEARTEDLY SURRENDERING ALL TO HIM

1 Corinthians 10

11These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. 12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

Oh I was a pro at that one! I would use my kids for that excuse! I would feel God convicting me or moving really strongly and the one thing for sure was my youngest was always acting up in church so I would use that chance to take her out or to hold her and cuddle her and try and console her right then instead of forgetting about her for a few minutes and listening to God!

I could turn him off and on so easily it was scary!

Oh I could write a book but I will spare and probably head to bed now! Been an awesome thread Bro...

Nice change of pace and ... a place AG can learn to "be nice again LOL"

I just saw this and I have to say I believe most pastors do know! I know our pastor is pretty quick on the draw on that one! He has preached on this one recently himself and he seems to be one who catches these things pretty quick!

I have been to some churches though that are totally opposite!

Sorry saw after I posted this that Steadfast said almost same things.... sorry!
